Cyber metal is a musical subgenre derived from industrial metal that combines sonic aspects of speed metal, shoegazing and synthpunk with the musical influence of melodic hardcore with the characteristic rhythms of rock with the musical elements of modern music.
This genre has the many sounds of electronic music and industrial music that is repeatedly accompanied in its arrangements with bases that simulate digital short circuit effects, the musical line respects a lot. It is the basis of dream pop and ethereal wave in the electronic effects in a companion in the very melodic sounds, and one more ingredient that makes this genre even more interesting, some bands resort to more melodic lines and others stay more in the post- metal, but without a doubt it is the effect of the bases that leads these groups to differentiate themselves since these sounds, despite being bases, make the melody and even the rhythm more complex.
Cyber metal appeared in the mid-1990s thanks to new bands that fused speed metal with electronic music and punk rock, noise rock in 1995. This killed two birds with one stone since the High popularity of electro-industrial and grunge skyrocketed and at the same time the last. neopsychedelia and no wave, proto-punk became the precursors of cyber metal. Cyber metal was offered in industrial rock and EBM.
Since then, cyber metal has become a more important subgenre of industrial metal with mixing the musical trend of speed metal with the mechanical, energetic, progressive and very dark side. Therefore, the combo has not abandoned its industrial rock visual aspect in favor of modern music, but just like cyber stuff.
After the appearance of these groups and the appearance of speed metal during the year 2000, following in the footsteps of Meshuggah, there were several trends in the performance of cyber metal, and this, depending on the groups of inspiration, the latter mentioned above. Furthermore, some groups did not hesitate to mix cyber metal with experimental metal.
This subgenre is above all a form of alternative metal, including industrial music that has the distinction of being experimental with sharp and cold riffs, a mechanical and sometimes robotic rhythm, a haggard, dehumanized or even synthetic song and more or less electronic elements. omnipresent, which reinforce not only the futuristic aspect of the music but also this feeling of dehumanization. According to certain trends, everything can be tinged with EBM or even techno elements, played with Herrschaft or Defcon.
Thanks to this musical ensemble, the atmospheres become even higher and allow cyber metal to be differentiated from industrial or electro-industrial metal. The environments are darker, more melancholic and pessimistic, more apocalyptic, cold and tortured. The addition of other instruments such as the piano or violins can reinforce this tragic side and the irreversible decline of humanity.
At first, Cybergrind was nothing more than a small movement among underground grindcore and hardcore punk bands, but in 2005, through the social network MySpace, the band We Came with Broken Teeth emerged, who released their debut album the same year. Sweet, Sweet Rock!" com Cybergrind as this subgenre that influenced new bands that would dedicate themselves to it such as Iamerror, I Shot the Dog Hunt Dog, Preschool Tea Party Massacre, The Berzerker, Hanni Kohl. The genre gained great popularity in the second half of the 2000s, mainly thanks to the work of We Came with Broken Teeth.
Cybergrind is characterized by having the harshness and chaotic sound of grindcore and hard, implementing the use of keyboards and samplers adding a darker, progressive or even sometimes funny timbre to the songs of this genre. The riffs are characterized by being brutal and having a very high degree of distortion and are also more technical and progressive than those of grindcore.
Since this key date, a few groups have tried to get their hands dirty in order to offer a real identity to this still little-known musical subgenre. If groups such as Division Alpha succeeded in integrating a very robotic, dark and synthetic touch to their music, it was not until 2003 with the release of the album SETI by The Kovenant and then in 2004 with that of Slave Design by Sybreed that the term was first coined and used. The Swiss of Sybreed were inspired by the cybernetic side of Fear Factory and the heavy, mathematical and syncopated side of Meshuggah, then very influential.
Following the emergence of these groups and the rise of modern metal[What?] during 2000, following in the footsteps of Meshuggah, there were several trends in the execution of cyber metal, depending on the inspiration groups, the latter having been cited previously. In addition, certain groups did not hesitate to mix cyber metal with death metal such as Hypnosis or Thy Disease, or with black metal such as Illidiance on their album Nexaeon.
From that moment on, Illidiance became one of the most important figures in cyber metal in Russia, mixing the electro metal[What?] trend of his country with the mechanical, percussive, apocalyptic and pessimistic side of Sybreed or Fear Factory . The combo therefore abandoned their black metal aspect in favor of a more modern but equally cybernetic aspect, inspiring lots of Russian bands such as Seecrees or All For Fake.
The end of the 2000s and the beginning of the 2010s marked a rise in the power of groups mixing cyber metal and metalcore or even melodic death metal, inspired by Sybreed, Soilwork or Scar Symmetry such as Logical Terror, The Interbeing or Cruentus.
